A note from Andrea

I've been leading photography workshops for over a decade, working with photographers of all levels to help them move beyond simply taking pictures and start understanding light, composition, and storytelling in a deeper way. During our time together, we work on composition, light, and technical skills while you're actually shooting.

With only 6 participants, I can focus on your specific level and goals, helping you refine your technique, simplify your compositions, and develop a more consistent way of working. My goal is that you leave not just with stronger images, but with a clearer process you can apply long after the workshop.

If you're wondering whether this teaching approach is right for you, learn more here.

WHY THIS WORKSHOP

Tuscany’s lush green fields and rolling hills are among the most iconic landscapes in photography. The Val d'Orcia region, in particular, has inspired photographers and artists for decades. It's easy to understand why. With mist-filled valleys, cypress-lined roads, charming hilltop towns, and sprawling vineyards, this is a landscape that captivates at every turn.

We created this 7-day Photography Workshop to guide you through the process of creating compelling landscape images and visual stories that reflect your unique vision. Our sessions cover the complete photographic workflow, from concept and shooting to equipment, editing, and image selection.

The tour is structured to give you the best opportunities to capture stunning images and improve your photography skills. With our local expertise, we’ll guide you to Tuscany’s most beautiful spots, ensuring you’re in the right place at the right time for the best light.

Traveling in a small group allows us to provide you with plenty of one-to-one tuition tailored to your needs, comfortably accommodating all experience levels, from beginners to professionals.

The best time to visit is Spring, when the fields are at their greenest, wildflowers bloom, and the countryside is at its peak beauty. At dawn, mist often settles in the valleys, creating a dreamy atmosphere that is perfect for photography.

This experience goes beyond typical workshops, focusing on what connects your images rather than just the hero shots. Podere Trafonti, with its welcoming people, amazing food, and beautiful rooms, quickly feels like a second home.

PRACTICAL DETAILS

  • This workshop runs with a minimum of 4 participants and is limited to a maximum of 6, so I can give each of you personalized mentorship and guidance, tailored to your experience and goals. This isn’t a crowded tour; it’s an intimate, immersive photography experience.

  • This workshop is open to beginners, professionals, and everything in between. The only criteria are that you have a passion for photography and have the motivation to be on the go every day and night.

  • EASY

This workshop includes relaxed walks through medieval towns and scenic countryside. Some paths may have cobblestones or slight inclines, but nothing particularly challenging.

Most of our locations are easily accessible, with short walks rather than long hikes. You can expect easy walking on dirt roads, vineyard paths, and gentle hills. In most cases, we’ll be relatively close to the car, so you won’t need to carry your gear for extended periods.

There’s no altitude to consider, but we’ll often be out during sunrise and sunset, which means early starts and some flexibility in your daily rhythm.

The workshop is designed to keep things comfortable and focused on photography. We move at a relaxed pace, with plenty of time to explore compositions, wait for the right light, and enjoy the landscape without feeling rushed.

WHAT’S ON THE ITINERARY

We’ll visit many of Tuscany’s iconic locations, including Belvedere farmhouse, Cappella di Vitaleta, Agriturismo Terrepille (the famous fields from “Gladiator”), Crete Senesi, the cypress trees near San Quirico d’Orcia, Poggio Covilli, Pienza, and other charming medieval walled towns.

Along with these well-known spots that everyone wants to see, we’ve also discovered some hidden gems over the years. As local guides, we’ve built strong relationships with local businesses and explored spots that most visitors don’t know about. These lesser-known locations, far from the usual Instagram crowds, will offer you a more authentic and fresh perspective of this beautiful region.

A TYPICAL DAY

We don’t believe in rigid schedules. Instead, our workshop is flexible, with location choices made organically based on the weather and lighting conditions. For instance, if the forecast predicts a cold and humid night, we’ll likely have morning mist, so we’ll select a location that works well in those conditions. This approach ensures we make the most of each moment, giving you the best possible shooting conditions.

We'll have plenty of time to explore each location, find compositions we’re happy with, and experiment with framing and exposure. At this time of year, sunrise is around 6:20 AM, and sunset is around 8:00 PM.

While our approach is flexible, it’s never unstructured. Every day flows naturally, as you’ll see in the breakdown below, which illustrates a typical day on our workshop, including shooting times, rest periods, and meal times. This ensures a well-balanced mix of shooting, learning, and downtime so you can fully immerse yourself in the experience.

  • On most days, we start early to capture the spectacular Tuscan sunrise. The early morning light in this region is simply magical, especially when overnight humidity creates the misty landscapes that have made this area famous among photographers. We'll position ourselves at carefully selected locations with plenty of time to prepare for when the golden light bathes the rolling hills.

After our sunrise shoot, we'll return to our accommodation for breakfast and a well-deserved rest period. This downtime is intentionally built into our itinerary for several reasons. First, the combination of early mornings and late evenings can be physically demanding, and this break helps prevent fatigue as the workshop progresses. Second, as the sun rises higher, the dramatic light and depth that make Tuscan landscapes so photogenic diminish significantly. Rather than shooting in unfavorable conditions, we use this time for you to rest, back up images, or enjoy the amenities at our accommodation.

  • Later in the morning, we reconvene for post-processing sessions designed to help you make the most of the images you've captured. These sessions are customized based on participants' experience levels and can range from basic Lightroom techniques to advanced Photoshop methods including Luminosity Masks.

We work in small groups with individual attention, demonstrating the same techniques we use for our own photography. All sessions are recorded and shared with the group, allowing you to review and practice these techniques at your own pace later. Toward the end of the workshop, we'll replace one processing session with a critique session, often one of the most enjoyable moments for participants, where each participant shares their favorite images for constructive feedback.

  • After lunch and a short break, we head out for our afternoon photography session. Our destinations are selected based on current weather conditions and lighting. We typically begin by exploring one of the charming Tuscan towns or villages with their distinctive architecture and character. This gives you practice with different photographic approaches before we move to our sunset location.

The afternoon and evening sessions provide ample time to find compelling compositions, experiment with different framing techniques, and perfect your exposures as the light changes. We conclude most days with dinner at a local restaurant, providing an authentic taste of Tuscan cuisine while discussing the day's photography.

  • During the workshop, we'll include a special day trip to explore some of the region's medieval towns. These charming locations offer a different photographic experience with their narrow winding streets, ancient architecture, and unique character. We'll capture both intimate street scenes within the towns and broader landscape views showing how these historic settlements blend harmoniously with the surrounding countryside.

Throughout the entire workshop, our small group size ensures you'll receive personalized attention and feedback, allowing you to develop your skills and creative vision in one of the world's most photogenic landscapes.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

This workshop is designed to give you practical tools you can apply immediately in the field. Rather than overwhelming you with theory, we focus on simple, effective concepts you’ll use while you’re actually shooting.

By the end of the week, you’ll feel more confident making decisions in the field—understanding how to approach a scene, what to look for, and how to translate what you see into stronger, more intentional images.

With a small group of just 5–6 participants, you’ll have the time and space to ask questions, receive direct feedback, and work through challenges as they come up. The learning happens in real time, in the field, where it matters most.

Unlike larger, fully structured tours, this experience is designed to stay flexible and personal. We adapt to the light and conditions, explore beyond the obvious locations, and keep the focus on learning rather than simply following a schedule.

The goal is simple: to give you the time, guidance, and space to improve your photography while genuinely experiencing this landscape.

You’ll leave not only with a strong set of images, but with a clearer way of seeing and a process you can carry into every shoot that follows.

    • Work with light. Understand how different types of light can affect the mood and the essence of an image. You’ll discover how to recognize a distinctive quality of light and work with it

    • Composition and how to frame a scene in order to balance and arrange visual elements effectively.

    • Lens choice. From the wide-angle vista to shooting landscape abstracts with a telephoto lens. With a different focal length, you can manipulate how the viewer perceives space and thus the relationship between objects.

    • Shooting multiple image panoramas

    • Controlling light in scenes with a wide dynamic range using graduated filters and/or multiple exposures

    • Painting with light

    • How to create time-lapses (optional)

    • Using Lightroom or Capture One for RAW conversion, and how to transform your raw files straight out of the camera to finished images ready to be shared.

    • Using Photoshop layers to build up image adjustments

    • Using luminosity masks in Photoshop

    • Different techniques for blending multiple exposures of the same image

    • Using Nik Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex, and Adobe Camera RAW on Photoshop layers

    • Stitching multiple panoramas together

    • Sharpening images

    • Light sculpturing with advanced Dodge & Burn techniques

  • Over the course of the workshop, we will take you to beautiful locations and give you every chance to get great shots while improving your technique. We limit the number of participants on our workshop to just six which gives us plenty of time with everyone in the field and from the beginning of your time with us, we’ll aim to identify your photographic level and what you’d like to focus on.

We'll tailor the workshop to meet your exact needs and provide plenty of one-to-one tuition both in the field and post-processing sessions, and having two shooting sessions a day means that you’ll get plenty of time in the field, so you can quickly get into a shooting rhythm where you can put new skills into practice.

As local guides with over 20 years of experience exploring the incredible landscapes of Tuscany, we have developed a strong understanding of the region’s weather patterns and light conditions. This expertise allows us to time our visits perfectly for amazing photography opportunities. Our knowledge of local conditions guarantees we can explore safely, even in unpredictable weather.

Finally, we want to share with you our passion for nature and landscape photography in this incredible place. Traveling in such small groups means we can quickly build a great learning environment where people feel comfortable together and at ease with asking questions and making the absolute most of the trip. We aim to make your experience here in the beautiful landscape of the Dolomites a memorable one and a trip from which, as well as getting some great images from amazing locations, you’ll also go home having had a true adventure with great company in a very special place.

  • The vibe of the workshop is a great mix of excitement, camaraderie, and calm. You'll experience plenty of laughs and lively conversations, but also those quiet moments of awe as we connect with the landscape.

What makes it special is the people you'll share it with—fellow photography enthusiasts who quickly become friends. Every time, I see it happen: strangers arrive, and by the end, they leave as close friends. There’s something magical about how a shared love for nature and photography brings people together.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY…

  • Andrea and Sabrina are motivated by their passion for the craft and are in it with all their heart! While (of course) the storytelling retreat features guided excursions, it is different from a regular photography workshop, instead, it is about the connective tissue in between your hero shots. Andrea & Sabrina introduce the concept and then gradually build upon it throughout the workshop, accommodating both inexperienced and seasoned shooters at the same time with ease. The course material is an important aspect, but it is only half of the equation: Podere Trafonti, the base of operations is a fantastic experience in and of itself - the people, the food, the house, and its beautifully decorated rooms. In a mere few days, it has come to feel like a second home away from home. Combined with carefully planned day trips (including some insider locations off the beaten "Instagram path") it makes for a truly unforgettable experience.

    Alex Bartox, Germany

  • First, as a background, I am a beginner and it was my first time using a proper SLR to take photos during my first photography workshop in Tuscany, Podere Trafonti !! Andrea and Sabrina with their exceptional professionalism and friendly and compassionate characters have navigated my novice capabilities through an amazing experience and learning process. During this unforgettable 5 days storytelling workshop I was able to learn about my camera, the different setups and adjustments, and techniques of taking shots while understanding composition. In addition, I learned some editing techniques and how to plan and organize the different shots for storytelling. Definitely, I was very lucky to have my first experience and workshop in photography with such great experienced, and fun guys. I am sure it will not be my last but just the start of many to follow if they put up and accept me in their coming ones.

    Sherif Barakat, Switzerland

  • From the very first moment until the last, you are treated like family. Nothing seemed like too much trouble and both the host and instructors went out of their way to cater for every need. The location is centrally placed for good access to the surrounding photographic sites yet it is tucked away a km from the nearest main road. The place is clean, spacious, and quiet with views out across rolling hills and green wooded countryside. The food is absolutely superb! Clean, fresh, healthy, and delicious. Much of the food is home-grown organically (including the honey) and prepared daily by the resident chef. The program is busy but nicely paced. The photography lessons were very relaxed and informal and presented both theory and practical from two very knowledgeable and experienced instructors. The programme was well structured but flexible to accommodate changing weather conditions. My five days stay on the Tuscany workshop just flew past!
